THE HIERARCHY COMPLEX

THE HIERARCHY COMPLEX

You are in ecstasy.

Your inner flame has lightened up.

You are super motivated and it’s on your mind all day.

You look forward to it and you tell all your friends about it.

And why not, you are proud being selected and you secretly make a hop in the air.

Yes, you got it! This is you! This is what you want and this is what you are really going to do!

And then, as soon as you want to show your talent ….

you get your profile assigned …

you are being shown how to act within the lines …

you receive feedback on what you need to improve …

is there talk about you instead of talking with you …

does everyone work for himself and not with each other …

will they expect more from you than the ‘credits’ you get in return …

The Gut Feeling

It feels like a shadow is thrown over your beautiful challenge, your plans and ambition.

It touches you and you let it come to you, a bit of doubt enters and every time a bit more. Your rational thinking begins to protect your emotional side.

Be aware! You are not alone. That’s how it goes with so many, no matter in what position, you get trapped in a dynamic that we create together. You begin to wonder and the mental and emotional struggle begins.

The Core

It is quite common for the hierarchy complex to hit us hard and often without being aware of it. Feelings of doubt about your own acting starts, walls are built and the conversation avoided. When these symptoms occur, we feel bitter and vulnerable and prefer to sweep them under the carpet. Our passion and drive are mostly turned into a ‘childish’ sarcastic defensive attitude, that at least protects you. And the joke is …. everyone who you have talked so enthusiastically about your new challenge begins to ask you…how you are doing?

Unconsciously the stress starts and you ask yourself, have I created this?

We want to contribute so much, we would like to show something of ourselves. Let our talents shine and make a difference for the people around us. We would like to find connection and celebrate the results together. “Putting our shoulders under” the goals and challenges, to feel that our commitment matters. That we can be there for who we are because that is what makes us so unique, not just yourself but the team. The reality in many companies is unfortunately different, there is often an artificial respect and working atmosphere. We avoid, sometimes ignore or we are just unconscious of the core of the situation and do not use the potential that really exists. Defensive and ‘back-up’ plans have become a necessity although what we really need to do is to change our mindset and organize ourselves differently. Have you ever thought about the impact of our traditional hierarchy structure and the way we calculate success?

Be Conscious

We know that most of us have the best intentions to work together regardless of the position they occupy. Most of us are looking for “how can I” make the right contribution to achieve success. The success often recounted in process, a calculation which is turning into a structure where everything and everyone has to look after a specific part. With this in mind, we limit space for motivation, for flexibility, for innovation, for efficiency and the ‘vibrancy’ that could bring the company to a unique level.

Stand still for a moment, breath, reflect and let the defense make way for awareness.

Perhaps ‘HUMANIZATION’ requires more investment, more courage and challenge, but that is exactly what is needed to achieve an exceptional reputation. You can continue to opt for the traditional way, but that hopefully helps you to achieve what you already have planned. The investment in human value leads to happiness and loyalty and the talent can often be converted into economic value. It pays of, far better than planned regular thoughts.

Inclusion

Sometimes it can clash, sometimes it can hurt, sometimes you will stamp your feet and scream. But stop! What are you going to do about it? How are you going to react? In order for teamwork to really succeed, we have to think in ‘We’ as a unit. Avoid exclusion, how difficult that may be. Frustration and anger lead to fragmentation, a process that often can’t be repaired and which costs many times more in reinvestment than to invest well in the team right from the start.

21 Century Experiences

Making real and genuine connections from person to person, from employee to guest and from guest to employee, increasingly plays a distinctive role in the success of the company. People want to experience something unique, something that can’t be achieved through process-driven cultures. This underestimated value requires a new ‘mind set’ and organization. According to ‘Forbes’ in 2018, 89% of the companies were mainly in competition based on guest experiences – coming from only 39% in 2010. 80% of these companies believe that they deliver a ‘super experience’ while only 8% of the guests agree.

How can your organization belong to that 8%?
